Minnesota Center for Book Arts is proud to announce the second Book Art Biennial, to take place in July 2011. The second MCBA Prize will also be awarded at the event.

"The 2009 Book Art Biennial was a great success. We were very impressed with the level of creativity and quality present," said Rathermel. "This is such a great opportunity for the field and for book artists across the world. I am positive that the 2011 event will be equally as engaging and continue to highlight the vitality of the art form."

The Book Art Biennial will consist of panel discussions, academic presentations and artist exhibitions centering around the theme of "extended engagement." Participants will explore the true power of books, focusing on the sequence, movement and continuous narrative that engage readers. More details on panel topics, panelists and keynote speakers will be announced in late 2010 and early 2011.

The MCBA Prize is the first award in the United States to recognize expertise, innovation and magnificence in the book arts from across the field and around the world. The 2009 winning artist, Veronika Schäpers from Tokyo, was selected from 113 submissions across 10 nations. The MCBA Prize celebrates the diversity of book art and encourages discussion rather than limiting recognition to one aspect of this vital field.

A distinguished panel of jurors, leaders in the field of book arts, have been selected as jurors for this award: artist and Arizona State University Assistant Professor Phil Zimmerman; artist, printmaker and Oregon College of Art and Craft Associate Professor Barbara Tetenbaum; and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago Curator Anne Dorothee (Doro) Boehme.

Information on the MCBA Prize, including submission guidelines, will be made available in early 2011. Please do not call or email MCBA to inquire when application materials will be available. If you would like to receive an email alert when application materials are available, please sign up here.

Congratulations to Veronika Schäpers, recipient of the 2009 MCBA Prize!
