VISITING ARTIST Learn two simple and inexpensive printmaking processes easily replicable in your home studio. Gum Arabic printing allows you to create litho-style printing plates from black-and-white photocopies. Gelatin printing is a form of monoprinting, using a gelatin slab and water-based inks to create images with an impressive detail of line and texture. These two processes can be used either separately or in combination to create a wide variety of effects. $225 ($200 members) + $30 supply fee

One of the most important artifacts of printing history is the iron hand press, a 19th century model constructed along the same basic principles as Gutenberg’s first printing presses. These beautiful presses are still used by artists and fine press printers today. In this workshop, you will design a piece to print in edition while we demonstrate and practice printing on different types of materials. We’ll also do multicolor printing the old way, using a single impression. $195 ($175 members) + $10 supply fee

Altered Books NOTE: Workshop has been rescheduled; the workshop will take place on the above dates. Dates listed in the printed workshop schedule are no longer valid. The term "altered book" covers a vast range of techniques, from books that have become sculptures to books that are still meant to be read. See a quick overview of altered books by contemporary artists. Then try it yourself with a sampling of techniques: subtracting, obscuring, and adding materials to the book. Bring 2-3 books to experiment on and 2-3 books you'd like to alter -- hardcover books have the most possibilities. Also bring small found objects, decorative papers, pictures, playing cards, anything that you'd like to have at hand. At the second meeting, focus on your chosen book. Through one-on-one and group discussions, develop and initiate a plan tailored to your vision. $260 ($235 members) + $15 supply fee

OPEN STUDIO SCHEDULES Open Studio: Bookbinding Open Studio provides access to binding tools, cutting equipment, and fellowship! Work on your own projects in the company of other artists in a friendly and supportive environment. Fee covers select text-weight paper, thread and PVA; supply your own bookboard, cloth, decorative papers and other needs. Plus, if you aren't already trained to use our cutting equipment, here is your opportunity! Through hands-on training you will learn the capabilities of each piece of MCBA’s cutting equipment, and how to use them correctly and safely. Completion of this training will permit you to rent this equipment and use it independently. Cutting Equipment Trainings take place on the second Tuesday of each month.
