Decisions about whether to cancel a workshop or add sections are typically made one week prior to the start of a workshop. JANUARY 2009

Multicolor Japanese Water-Based Woodblock Printing
with Emily Hoisington
Six Tuesdays: January 19, 26, February 2, 9, 16, 23; 6-9pm
Great for beginners

Make a multicolor woodblock print from start to finish while learning a water-based, portable printing method that is easy to practice at home. Learn special effects such as gradations and textures. Experiment to make each print different, or work to produce consistent prints for a small edition. Supply fee includes a set of five Japanese carving tools.

Letterpress Open Studio

Open Studio provides access to tools and equipment, plus fellowship! Open Studio sessions are not workshops; they are opportunities to work independently under the supervision of an experienced artist who can answer questions, share tips and tricks, and help you hone your skills. Work on your current project in a friendly and supportive environment.

Register at least one week in advance to reserve a press. Reservations are first-come-first-served, and students must have had an introductory course on the press they are requesting (Vandercook, platen, sign).

Letterpress I (Monday section)

Great for beginners

This introductory workshop offers you a thorough introduction to hand typesetting and presswork. Essential for any beginning printer or printmaker, we will cover the basics of design, typography, illustration, and operation of the Vandercook press. We will begin printing on the first evening with a pre-selected project, and then you will design and print a small edition of broadside prints on beautiful paper with text and image of your choice. This is an excellent workshop for beginners and for those who wish to gain additional experience with presses. You will receive individualized attention and feedback on your personal project.

FEBRUARY 2010

Introduction to Screenprinting
with Sara Parr
Six Thursdays: February 4, 11, 18, March 4, 11, 18; 6-9pm
Great for beginners

Screenprinting is a fun and fast way to create multi-color imagery for books or broadsides and can be combined with any other medium. Learn the basics of preparing and printing with photo emulsion by making an 8x10” edition of your own design.

$250 ($225 members) + $45 supply fee

VISITING ARTIST WORKSHOP
Magic Books: Now You See It, Now You Don't

with visiting artist Emily Martin
Saturday & Sunday, February 6-7; 10am-4pm
All skill levels welcome

In this two-day workshop, explore a number of book structures which have elements that appear and disappear when the structures are manipulated. Single sheet books, 2D and 3D flexagons, magic wallets and Jacob's Ladders will be presented. Students will make models and also construct their own individual examples using their own drawings, photographs, rubber stamps, collages, etcetera. Participants should bring collage materials such as postcards or photographs, plus any other specific items they’d like to use like rubber stamps, markers, colored pencils, stickers and/or other visual materials.

$195 ($175 members) + $35 supply fee

Advanced Binding: Half Bound Leather
with Jana Pullman
Six Thursdays: February 11, 18, 25, March 4, 11, 18; 6-9pm
Bookbinding experience required

Advance your bookbinding skills! This workshop will introduce using leather in bindings. Students will sew a blank book on sunken cords with a tube spine lining to make a smooth rounded back. The binding will be finished with a leather-covered spine and corners and hand marbled paper.

$250 ($225 members) + supply fee: $75 includes leather paring knife / $60 if you provide your own knife

Visual Journal Collective

Do you keep a visual journal? Do you wonder how others approach this art form? Would you like an opportunity to get to know peers and be inspired by their work? Are you interested in a forum for exchanging information on the newest pens, paints, and other supplies? Do you want to commit time to practice your drawing skills or find a sketching partner? Do you just want to touch base each month with people who understand journaling?

Join facilator Roz Stendahl at MCBA's Visual Journal Collective. This group is open to all visual journal artists of any skill level. We'll discuss methods, materials, and media. Group members will be encouraged to participate in round robin journals and theme projects. A Pair of Japanese Bindings
with Jana Pullman

All skill levels welcome

Discover the beauty and simplicity of Japanese bindings. We will make two styles of Japanese books, the Daifuku Cho account ledger and the Retchoso multisection book. To finish the class we will create a Chitsu wrap-around case with bone closures.

Rag Paper
with Emily Hoisington
Two Saturdays: February 20 & 27; 10am-5pm
All skill levels welcome

Bring worn-out cotton and linen clothes or sheets and recycle them into handmade paper. Experiment with beating durations, combining different pulps, making thick and thin paper, and textures resulting from different drying methods.

Intro to Polymer Platemaking for Letterpress

Saturday & Sunday, February 27-28; 10am-5pm
Letterpress I required

Bring your digital designs to reality through letterpress printing. Learn about digital design issues including film output, plate processing and printing basics. Bring photos, drawings, text or digital layout to the first session. Students will make plates and print their work. Examples and resources along with detailed instructions for processing your own plates will be provided.

Cutting Equipment Training + Bookbinding Open Studio

Bookbinding Open Studio's supply fee covers select text papers, select thread and PVA; supply your own bookboard, cloth, decorative papers and other needs. If you aren't already trained to use our cutting equipment, here is your opportunity! Through hands-on training you will learn the capabilities of each piece of MCBA’s cutting equipment, and how to use them correctly and safely. Completion of this training will permit you to rent this equipment and use it independently.

$15 supply fee ($10 members)

Boxmaking Made Easy

Saturday, March 6; 9:30am-5pm and Sunday, March 7; 12-5pm

An intensive weekend workshop that will focus on three types of boxes: a small cube with a fitted lid, a cigar-style box with a hinged lid, and a portfolio box. Students will explore a variety of papers and methods for decoration with possibilities for more complicated structures.

Non-Adhesive Bindings: Elegance Without Glue
with Sue Bjerke
Saturday, March 13; 10am-6pm and Sunday, March 14; 12-5pm
All skill levels welcome

Non-adhesive bindings can be simple yet elegant choices for small editions and artist’s books. Over the two days we will make four bindings, beginning with a two-section pamphlet stitch with ribbon closure. An Asian stab binding will be the second structure. The dos equis binding and a chevron long stitch book will round out this brief introduction to binding without glue. This will be a jam-packed weekend of book binding fun and will include discussion of more alternatives for non-adhesive forms as time allows. We will use a variety of decorative papers for covers and several weights of text papers for the book blocks. Discussion of various material considerations and design options will accompany each binding style.

Marbling Open Studio

Have you taken a marbling workshop, but still feel a little uncertain about working independently? Gain confidence by participating in Open Studio. Open Studio sessions are not workshops; rather they are opportunities to work independently under the watchful eye of an experienced artist who can answer questions, share tips and tricks, and help you hone your skills. Bring your own paint and paper. MCBA will supply alum, combs, cups, eyedroppers and 16" x 20" tanks of carragheenan.

This workshop is designed to give you the skills and confidence to work independently on a Vandercook press. Gain technical skills with edition printing and color mixing as you work on a project planned with guidance from the instructor. Throughout the course, you will receive individualized attention and feedback on your independent project.

Studio Equipment: Collapsible Punching Cradle
with Sue Bjerke
Thursday, March 25; 6:30-9:30pm
All skill levels welcome

By popular demand, another of Sue's popular Do-It-Yourself studio equipment workshops! Make a collapsible and portable punching cradle out of heavy bookboard and bookcloth. A punching cradle is a must-have for preparing signatures for almost any sewn binding technique, and will make your bookmaking life easier!

Urban Journaling
with Roz Stendahl
Saturday, March 27; 9am-5pm
All skill levels welcome

Learn to observe and document your urban environment and experiences in an elegant, almost glue-free book construction. First, students will create an archival multi-signature, longstitch book with a reinforced spine and soft-wrapped cover. Text pages will be acid-free art paper perfect for all sketching media. Next, students will learn observational and journaling techniques through discussion, demonstration, and examples from the instructor's journals. (Optional cover decoration methods students can execute outside of class will also be presented.) Following a lunch break, class will reconvene for an afternoon of sketching and journaling at the Mall of America. People, objects, architecture, conversations, behavior -- it will all fall under our scrutiny. Students will experience sketching in public with a group. (A brand new sketching pen -- the instructor's favorite -- is included in the supply fee.)

APRIL 2010

Book Arts for Parents, Caregivers and Teachers of Preschoolers (ages 2 to pre-K)

All skill levels welcome

Explore bookmaking as a way of developing early childhood literacy and a lifelong love of books. The class will begin with a discussion of age-appropriate storybooks and activities that can be used to get children ready for bookmaking. Most of our time will be spent creating basic M-fold, stick-binding and whipstitch books, and experimenting with variations of each. Special attention will be paid to using materials and tools that are accessible, reusable and inexpensive. Browse through commercial, artist-made and preschooler-made non-traditional books for more ideas. Handouts listing additional bookmaking and art opportunities for preschoolers will be provided.

Skewer Binding

All skill levels welcome

Learn to use a piano hinge and wooden cooking skewers to bind an unusual and dramatic looking book. Once learned, you can substitute other unique items for the hinge pins. Using interlocked folds and special cuts, the only item glued is the cover. Add this unique binding strategy to your repertoire!

Miniature Books
with Jana Pullman
Saturday & Sunday, April 10-11; 10am-5pm
All skill levels welcome

Explore the joy and precision of working small. A true miniature book is less than 3 inches tall and requires difference techniques and materials for its binding. Participants will study these differences by making two books. First, make a simplified binding with a leather spine and then a one-half inch by one-half inch accordion structure with 2 point printed text. Learn how fascinating it can be to work in miniature.

Paste Paper

Great for beginners

Paste paper is a simple but sophisticated method of decorating paper, limited only by your imagination. Dampened paper is coated with pigmented paste and designs are combed or scraped into the surface. Limitless design possibilities exist using combs, brushes, graining tools and even found objects to produce intricate designs.

Tab and Fold: Another Elegant Non-Adhesive Book Structure
with Sue Bjerke
Thursday, April 22; 6:30-9:30pm
All skill levels welcome

This is a non-adhesive binding using a tab-and-fold method to interlock the structure. Covers will be cut from a single sheet of flax paper, a durable and beautiful material to use. The book block is sewn in the traditional manner. This structure is adaptable for many uses and a good one to have in your repertoire.
