AUGUST 2008

Polymer Platemaking for Letterpress
with Paulette Myers-Rich
Mondays & Wednesdays: Aug 4, 6, 11, 13; 6-9pm
Letterpress experience required

Photopolymer plates are light-sensitive plastic sheets that, when exposed to UV light under a negative and washed out with water, create a relief printing plate that can be used for image and text in letterpress printing. Polymer plates can be used to create sophisticated designs using image and text by combining analog and digital tools. This workshop will cover basics for creating both digital and hand-drawn negatives, using service bureaus, digital design for the letterpress and printing tricks using the finished plates. Students will learn to use the MCBA platemaker and will also make plates by hand.

Prerequisites: students should have basic computer word processing experience at a minimum, and have completed Letterpress 1.

Each uses very little adhesive and can adapt to almost any book or collection of prints or papers.

Alternative Printmaking
with Dean Ebben
Saturday & Sunday, October 18-19; 10am-5pm

In gum arabic printing, a high contrast black and photocopy can be use to print on a variety of surfaces such as paper, fabric, or wood. Use it as a base texture for painting, collage, or to make decorative paper for bookmaking. Gelatin printing retains detail of line and texture if an object is pressed against it and can be carved as well. The results are almost photographic. Learn how to pour a gelatin plate and use it for a versatile form of monoprinting. This is not your grandmother’s Jell-O recipe!

Crash Course Color Poster Printing Adventure
with Paulette Myers-Rich
Saturday & Sunday, November 22 & 23; 10am-4pm
Letterpress I experience required

Learn how to mix color on the Vandercook cylinder press without cleaning the press for each change, while making improvisational posters with wood-type, ornamental rule, dingbats, and wood and linoleum cuts. We'll get several presses up and running at once which will allow participants to experiment with design and color and come away with an appreciation for the possibilities of the Vandercook for printmaking as well as printing (as well as some great prints!). Students may bring wood or linoleum cuts to class, (we will not be cutting blocks during this session), quotable text, or just their willingness to play and participate.
