Throughout the year, MCBA offers a sampler of one-session classes for families to experience the book arts together, as well as free workshops in the MCBA studios.


AUGUST 2008

Marbling Madness
with Jenea Rewertz-Targui
Saturday, August 9; 1:30-3:30 pm
For families with children ages 6 and up

Swirl and comb colors together to make beautiful marbled paper. Make zigzags and circles and other fun patterns while learning about the rich tradition of this ancient and once secretive art form. Take your paper home to use for craft projects, wrapping paper or to give away as gifts. Adults and children will make their own papers to take home!

$24 ($22 members) per adult/child pair

Let’s Get Baking
with Ellen Ferrari
Tuesday, August 5; 10am-12pm
For families with children ages 2 and up

First, come hungry for Whopper Cake by Karma Wilson and Will Hillenbrand. Second, make a triangle-shaped pie book alamode. Third, make a whopper-sized chocolate cake book. And last, make a cookie book with cookie bags and silverware. There will be sweet treats to eat.

Let’s Go to the Museum
with Ellen Ferrari
Tuesday, August 12; 10am-12pm
For families with children ages 2 and up

Come and meet two artists in When Pigasso met Mootisse by Nina Laden. Learn to make paper with white cotton pulp, then “paint” your masterpieces with paper pulp in a rainbow of colors. Use cookie cutters, spoons and turkey basters for added artistic effects. “Art Opening” snacks will be served. Dress for mess with water-safe shoes.

Let’s Go Fishing
with Ellen Ferrari
Tuesday, August 19; 10am-12pm
For families with children ages 2 and up

Get hooked on Marcus Pfister’s The Rainbow Fish. Then use colored and glittery papers, glitter paint, brushes and lots of rubbery fish to print a GIANT rainbow fish, sunfish, catfish or perch. “Catch” a bucket of fish prints to take home and share some fishy snacks when we’re done.

For families with children ages 2 and up

Celebrate the Minnesota State Fair with Donald Crews’ Night at the Fair. Buy your ticket (book) – yay! Enjoy some scrumptious food on a stick (book) — yum! Visit your favorite animals at the livestock barn (book) — noisy! Take a spin on a midway ride (book) — whee! And finally, fair food for all.

Leaf Notebook

Sunday, September 28; 1:30-3:30 pm
For families with children ages 6 and up

Create a leaf notebook to capture the beauty of fall. This hard cover book will contain sealable pockets for leaves and seeds, pages for mounting and paper for writing and sketching. This structure is versatile enough to use as a journal or memory keeper. Each participant will make a book.

Halloween Mask BOO-ks!

For families with children ages 2 and up

Get ready for Halloween with Littlebat’s Halloween Story by Diane Mayr and by creating your own silly, scary or boootiful Halloween mask book – or is it a book mask? Fold some papers. Pick a stick. Decorate with colors and collage. A book for Halloween stories! A mask for Halloween trick or treat!

Halloween Paper Party

Celebrate Halloween at MCBA’s paper party. Make paper Frankenstein heads, pumpkins, bats, spiders and more! Chose from a variety of pulp colors. Stencils and shape deckles will be provided to help you create your creepy creatures! Each participant will make paper!

NOVEMBER 2008

Holiday Note Cards

Sunday, November 2; 12:30-5pm
For families with children ages 6 and up

Jump into the holiday spirit by making your own cards this season. Each adult/child pair will create note cards with a festive image and simple greeting using pressure and letterpress printing techniques. Please note that each pair will print 40 cards. Each additional participant will print 20 cards. Envelopes also will be provided.

Thanksgiving Paper

Saturday, November 8; 10am-12pm
For families with children ages 2 and up

Celebrate the colors and aromas of Thanksgiving dinner by “cooking” up some paper. Start by pulling sheets of white paper, then add onion skin yellow, cabbage purple, cranberry red, orange orange, and more! Use herbs and spices, such as crumpled sage, grated cinnamon and nutmeg, too. Waterproof shoes are suggested.

Snow Play

For families with children ages 2 and up

Kate Spohn’s Snow Play will get us ready to build a blizzard of books. A soft fluffy snowball book. A sled book with runners. A snowfort book that sparkles in the sun. And a warm mug-of-hot-chocolate book. We provide the “snow” and you write the snow stories.

Asian Paper Marbling and Bookmaking
with Jenea Rewertz-Targui
Sunday, December 7; 10:30am-2:00pm
For families with children ages 6 and up

Learn the art of Sumi nagashi, the 2,000-year-old technique of decorating paper with inks, originating in China and practiced in Japan. Create multiple sheets and then make a small Japanese stab binding book that features your new paper. These make great holiday gifts! Each participant will marble papers and make a book. Please bring a bag lunch for a 30-minute lunch break.

Explore the beautiful Japanese paper art form of origami! Fold a variety of creations from animals to books as you work alongside MCBA's exhibition 100 Views of the Peace Crane.
