UPCOMING VISITING ARTISTS WORKSHOPS
Cynthia Thompson (Memphis, TN) is Associate Professor of Book and Paper Arts at Memphis College of Art, and recipient of an artist residency at MCBA. Cynthia is an accomplished papermaker, printmaker and book artist, and has also worked with Dieu Donne Papermill and the Broksky Center. Her residency work will be based on research completed during visits to the Dominican convent of San Marco in Florence, Italy. Layer Upon Layer: Stencils in Papermaking and Printing Focusing on the expanded and varied use of the stencil, this course will introduce students to the basics of both hand papermaking and letterpress printing through the creation of a multi-layered broadside print edition. This edition will be housed within a handmade paper folio. Using one of many techniques demonstrated, students will design and create stencils to be used as a watermark in their handmade paper. Students will then make handmade sheets of paper containing their watermark. Several varied hand papermaking techniques will be demonstrated as well as a “line bleeding” technique in which imagery is created by flooding pigmented pulp through yet another stencil. In part two of the workshop, students will create another set of stencils to be used for printing on the vandercook press. A thorough demonstration of pressure printing will be covered including instructions for creating stencils— from the very simple to the more intricate— using various methods and imagery, ink modification, various printing techniques and suggestions for collaborative endeavors with other media. Students will create a multi-layered print on their handmade paper using various stencils and modified ink. $85 ($75 members) + $15 supply fee
From Fiber to Print: Chine Collé and Letterpress Focusing on traditional Eastern techniques, students will learn to make use of the creative possibilities offered by Japanese papermaking in order to create a contemporary print edition incorporating chine collé. Students will gain a thorough understanding of how to process Kozo fiber by hand. Using traditional Japanese papermaking molds, varied sheets of translucent paper will be created. Experimental techniques will also be explored using both Eastern and Western papermaking molds utilizing pigmented fibers and stencils. These sheets with then be incorporated into an edition through the technique of chine collé. $85 ($75 members) + $15 supply fee
Shawn Sheehy (Chicago, IL) has produced two pop-up artist books in editions and is in the process of editioning the third. In the Spring of 2010 the limited edition pop-up Welcome to the NeighborWood: A Pop-Up Book of Animal Architecture will be published as a trade book. His commercial clients of paper engineering include American Girl. Shawn teaches at Columbia College Chicago and has also taught for such organizations as PaperWorks in Tucson, BookWorks in Asheville and The Center for Book Arts in New York. The Mechanics of Movables Pull a tab. Turn a wheel. Bring new life to your page by animating it with movables! In this two-day workshop, participants will learn the fundamental principles that guide the movables seen in many interactive books published today. Beginning with basic tools and techniques, the workshop will quickly move on to building a series of increasingly complex movable structures based on wheels, pull tabs and other ingenious mechanisms. Participants will leave with a bound collection of 10-15 models. Throughout the workshop, participants will view and discuss the work of commercial paper engineers and discuss conceptual possibilities for movables in their own work. No experience necessary, though patience is a must! $225 ($200 members) + $15 supply fee
Karen Randall (Northampton, MA) is a poet, visual artist and proprietor of Propolis Press, which publishes contemporary American poetry in the form of limited edition artist's books. She has taught at Naropa University, New York's Center for Book Arts and the San Francisco Center for the Book. MASTER CLASS By layering four colors of ink on top of one another, you can produce richly detailed and luminous letterpress images from photopolymer plates. We'll focus on the technical challenges of registering images from multiple plates and discuss the nuances of using papers, inks, line screens and packing. Access to Photoshop software is also required. In preparation for this workshop you will need to prepare a full color digital image (either a photograph, a scanned image, or an image created in Photoshop) to be made into a polymer plate. You will follow a detailed PDF describing how to separate your full color image into four greyscale images (representing cyan, magenta, yellow & black). You are responsible for bringing finished polymer plates to the first class meeting. You may either pay to have plates produced for you by a vendor such as Boxcar Press, or make them yourself if you are experienced in polymer plate making. $195 ($175 members) plus $15 supply fee
