Analog Screen Print 1: Drawing on Screens

  • Minnesota Center for Book Arts 1011 South Washington Avenue #100 Minneapolis, MN 55415 United States (map)

Thursday, January 7; 6–9pm CT

Stop looking at your computer screen and start looking at your mesh printing screen! Learn two of the simplest and most approachable ways to create a screen printing stencil, in this in-person workshop.

First, we'll lay down a color field using cut-paper stencils. Then, we'll add expressive line work by drawing directly on the screen with drawing fluid and screen filler—a loose, analog process that rewards spontaneity over precision.

Everyone will leave with their own two-color print, plus the know-how to keep experimenting at home or in MCBA’s Screen Print Labs. Both techniques are low-tech and replicable without a full studio setup. All you really need is a squeegee, a screen, and a surface to print on.

This is a non-toxic, low-mess, beginner-friendly session, perfect for those who are curious about screen printing, but intimidated by photo emulsion and exposure units; and for printmakers looking to bring more drawing and line into your work. Come ready to work with your hands, embrace the unpredictable, and enjoy an unplugged, analog evening.

Level: Beginner. All skill levels are welcome; no drawing or printmaking is required—just a willingness to get a little messy and let go of perfectionism.
Certificate: 3 hours, Category A or D
