Join us in MCBA’s studios for a day of book arts and earn your Book Artist Badge!
Visit MCBA’s studios and learn about the history of the book and contemporary book arts. In a series of three hands-on mini classes, participants will bind books, make paper from natural fibers, and print on an antique letterpress. Each class is led by a professional book artist. The day’s activities meet and exceed the requirements of the Girl Scouts’ Book Artist Badge.
Groups of up to ten participants will rotate through MCBA’s studios where a teaching artist and parent volunteer will guide them through an activity lasting about 45 minutes. The event will finish with a self-guided activity in MCBA’s gallery and public spaces in Open Book.
We need about six caregivers to volunteer at the event to guide individual groups from activity to activity and to assist each teaching artist. Caregivers interested in volunteering can fill out this Volunteer Interest Form to share their name, contact information, and connection(s) to participants.
Caregivers who do not sign up to volunteer are welcome to stay and enjoy the exhibition in the gallery, the Shop at MCBA, and the rest of Open Book. Any parents interested in participating in the day’s activities will need to register ahead of time.
Accessibility
Open Book has an elevator and accessible gender-neutral bathrooms. Quiet space will be available for anyone needing a break from the hubbub of the studios. Book Artist Badge Day is open to girls and gender-expansive youth, including cisgender girls, transgender girls, non-binary, and gender-diverse individuals ages 10–18 interested in book arts.

$65 per participant (10% discount for MCBA members)
$10 materials fee
Space is limited to 30 participants. MCBA members receive a 10% discount on tuition.
