In this in-person workshop, learn how to build this unique and playful structure with an artist who has fine-tuned the box design.
Inspired by the Jacob's Ladder, the magic box is a double-hinged container made of board wrapped in paper that opens in two directions, revealing unique compartments on each side. Designed for functionality, the box contains compartments big enough to hold a standard deck of playing cards. The magic box can also serve as a jewelry box or a beautiful container for other small, important items.
Build one unwrapped box first—to be used for reference when building boxes independently in the future—then, make one complete and fully wrapped box in the workshop. Instruction will cover how to prepare and source materials to make more magic boxes independently after the workshop ends. Instruction includes training on MCBA’s board shears to cut book board for future boxes.
Level: Intermediate. Participation in any other box making workshop is required so participants come with experience wrapping boards and checking to make sure boards and compartments are square.
Certificate: 9 hours, Category B, C, or D

MCBA offers two scholarship types for workshops—Financial Hardship Scholarships and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) Scholarships—to honor equity and increase access and artistic opportunities for those who have historically been underrepresented in the book arts. For individuals to whom these scholarships do not apply, register at the Adult rate and, if you are able, consider making a donation when registering to support MCBA’s efforts to make scholarships available.
