The one-section hard-cover binding is a terrific structure for bookbinding beginners and practicing book artists alike!
Not all books need to be dozens of pages long, but having rigid covers can help elevate a project by giving it a familiar, hard-cover polish.
In this virtual workshop, participants will work from an instructor-provided kit to sew a single section of pages onto a strip of bookcloth, build a hard cover for their text block, and finally: attach the section to the case to form a whole, small book.
This one-off workshop offers an excellent point of entry for foundational concepts and practices in bookbinding. For those who are interested, the workshop will conclude with a discussion of how to edition (produce a run of identical multiples) this structure from the comfort of a home studio.
Level: Beginner. All skill levels are welcome.

What you'll need to participate
Tech requirements: For this participatory virtual workshop we recommend joining on a laptop or desktop computer with a camera and microphone, if possible. You will receive step-by-step instructions for downloading Zoom (it’s free!) and accessing the workshop online approximately 2 days before the workshop’s start date.
Materials: You are responsible for sourcing your own materials from the materials list. You are welcome to reach out to teaching artists with questions about materials in advance of the workshop (contact information is listed on the materials list).
