Japanese Papermaking

  • Minnesota Center for Book Arts 1011 South Washington Avenue #100 Minneapolis, MN, 55415 United States (map)
  • Posted In: Workshop, In-Person, Beginner, Papermaking and Paper Marbling
  • Saturday, April 19; 10am–5pm CT

Explore the tools and techniques of Japanese papermaking in this in-person workshop.

Learn fiber preparation techniques including cooking, cleaning and hand beating, sheet formation, pressing, and drying. Finished papers can be strong yet nearly translucent, and sheet size can range from 5 x 7 inches to 5 x 7 feet! Come away from the workshop with the skills needed to make Japanese paper independently during MCBA’s Papermaking Labs.

Wear clothing that can get dirty and shoes that can get wet (i.e. rubber boots, garden clogs, etc.). Participants need to return to pick up their paper on Saturday, 4/26, or later in The Shop at MCBA to allow the wet sheets of paper time to dry while pressed flat for a few days.

Level: Beginner. All skill levels are welcome. Papermaking is a wet and physical process that involves repeated lifting and bending. Accommodations can be made for individuals with specific needs (please share these when registering) and we encourage all abilities to participate in ways that feel safe and comfortable.
Certificate: 7 hours, Category A or B; fulfills the Core papermaking requirement

Please note: Registration closes 4/14 at midnight (CT).
