Paper Spectacle: A Pop-Up Panorama Book

  • Minnesota Center for Book Arts 1011 South Washington Avenue #100 Minneapolis, MN, 55415 United States (map)

Saturday–Sunday July 18 & 19; 10am–4pm CT

Design and construct a layered pop-up panorama book inspired by Lothar Meggendorfer’s International Circus, in this in-person workshop with visiting artists Julie Chen and Erin McAdams.

Housed within a hardcover binding, this dynamic structure reveals six three-dimensional scenes that unfold into a continuous panorama when the book is fully opened for display.

Imagery will be developed through a combination of collage, pochoir, and rubber stamping. Participants should arrive with preliminary ideas for six layered scenes. While all visual elements may be created during the workshop, participants are encouraged to bring images they wish to incorporate—such as personal photographs, drawings, or found imagery. All collage materials should be printed on cover-weight paper.

MCBA's Visiting Artist Program is generously supported by Cathy Ryan & Doris Engibous.

Level: Intermediate. Participants should be familiar with book arts and have a working knowledge of basic tools (for example: bonefolder, x-acto knife, cutting mat, awl) and how to use them safely. Experience with basic bookbinding processes—including, knowledge of paper grain, how to fold paper—is also helpful. Previous experience with pop-up or movable structures is not required.
Participants must have taken Introduction to Hand Bookbinding (or equivalent) to enroll in this workshop.
Certificate: 12 hours, Category B, C, or D
