Phežúta Mniȟúha: Medicine Paper

  • Minnesota Center for Book Arts 1011 South Washington Avenue #100 Minneapolis, MN, 55415 United States (map)

Saturday, May 16; 10am–4pm CT

This in-person workshop explores the incorporation of traditional Indigenous plant material with papermaking processes.

Delia Touché was taught by elders and family to practice ceremony and prayer in various ways. One way she carries ceremony in their work is by including Dakohta and Assiniboine traditions in the creation process.

Participants will be introduced to both Western and DIY papermaking techniques, including how to prep your vat, dye fibers, decorate and embed natural materials into the sheets. Delia will bring a variety of plants, including Sweetgrass, Tobacco, and Cedar.

Wear clothing that can get dirty and shoes that can get wet (i.e. waterproof and slip-resistant shoes/boots, etc.). Participants need to return to pick up their paper on Saturday, 5/23, or later in The Shop at MCBA to allow the wet sheets of paper time to dry while pressed flat for a few days. Participation in European Papermaking is needed in order to attend Papermaking Labs to make paper independently in MCBA’s studios.

Accommodations can be made for individuals with specific needs (please share these when registering) and we encourage all abilities to participate in ways that feel safe and comfortable.

Level: Beginners. All levels are welcome.
Certificate: 6 hours, Category A or B; fulfills the Core papermaking requirement
