Rebus: Image as Riddle

  • Minnesota Center for Book Arts 1011 South Washington Avenue #100 Minneapolis, MN, 55415 United States (map)

Rebuses are messages or puzzles in which pictures, letters, or symbols represent sounds.

In this in-person workshop, create several rebus-based projects using imagery from a vintage set of rebus rubber stamps, stencils, and other found imagery. In addition to paper, each participant can select a vintage stereoscope card and two vintage postcards. Participants are also encouraged to bring and work with their own ephemera, such as photographs or old letters. We’ll start with a brief history of the form dating back to Benjamin Franklin’s enigmatic rebus. A list of suggested words and phrases composed of images will be provided, and participants will also be able to develop their own phrases through imagery. This workshop is an opportunity to experiment with combining images to form text in novel and playful ways and is suitable for all experience levels.

Level: Beginner. All skill levels are welcome.
    Certificate: 3 hours, Category B or D
