Sewing Card Magic: One-, Two- & Three-Section Books

When making one-, two-, and three-section books, the sewing card is an awesome tool for mastering simple to advanced sewn bindings.

Practicing the mechanics of any sewing on a two-dimensional card is tantamount to working on an actual book.

In this in-person workshop, learn how to prepare and make sewing cards in a variety of patterns for one-, two-, and three-section books. Then, learn how to use the cards as templates to bind books. We’ll make five (or six, if time allows) sewing cards featuring unique patterns, including chain stitch, lazy Zs, Vs, and Ks. In addition to being practical tools for binding, the sewing cards are beautiful objects and satisfying to hold.

Rosae Reeder (she/her, Philadelphia PA) is a book artist and printmaker whose work combines various alternative photographic processes, digital collage, book structures, and traditional printmaking media such as letterpress, lithography, and monotype. After four years of teaching virtually with MCBA, we’re excited to welcome Rosae to Minneapolis to teach a rare in-person workshop.
