Immerse yourself in the oldest form of marbling, Suminagashi 墨流し (“spilled or floating ink”).
In this one-day, in-person workshop, we will explore the materials, techniques, and history of this art before spending most of the workshop practicing this meditative art. We will play with paper and tools. This art form is a great way to practice meditation as it is all about exploring the different variations of repetitive movement. Everyone will go home with a set of notecards.
A variety of papers will be provided to experiment and play with different effects. Participants are also welcome to bring their own. Paper that works well are mulberry paper (100-150 gsm) or printmaking paper (80lb) with a smooth finish. Paper should be no larger than 12 x 9.5 inches in order to fit in the Suminagashi vats.
Wear clothes that can get dirty and non-slip, supportive, water-resistant shoes (i.e., rubber boots, garden clogs, etc.). Participants may need to return to pick up their paper on Saturday, 2/8, or later in The Shop at MCBA to allow the wet sheets of paper time to dry.
Level: Beginner. All skill levels are welcome.
Certificate: 3 hours, Category A or D
