Tactile Books: Fiber Arts and Bookbinding

  • Minnesota Center for Book Arts 1011 South Washington Avenue #100 Minneapolis, MN, 55415 United States (map)

Saturday–Sunday, April 11 & 12; 10am–4pm CT

In this in-person workshop, explore the area where fibers and book arts overlap to create truly tactile books, engaging with a variety of materials to make one-of-a-kind works that satisfy both the visual and sensual experience of the reader.

A book doesn’t come to life until it is in the hands of the reader. Held, opened, pages turned, books offer a haptic experience few other artworks do. Fiber artists have long understood how to combine the physical and visual experience.

We’ll begin with addressing where to source materials, including how to repurpose old textiles into new works before moving into basic bindings like folded one-sheet books and pamphlet stitches. Learn how to use interfacing, spray starch, and quilting-related techniques to give structure and body to your fabric pieces, experimenting with techniques long-used by seamstresses and grandmothers to make their sewn objects endure. We will conclude with image- and text-making techniques, including embroidery, applique, and painting to add content to our structures.

Instruction will consist of several demos, each followed by assisted individual work time. While Amanda will be leading the group, work time will resemble the traditional quilting bee or sewing circle with participants sharing knowledge, stories, and ideas while we craft our books. Participants will leave with several models as well as 1–3 books in progress. All materials needed will be provided but participants are encouraged to bring any cotton fabric or scraps they may want to work with or share with others from their personal stash.
