Learn techniques for generating text for artist's books through conceptual approaches: text as image, as narrative, and as lyrical expression.
Join us for a rare in-person workshop with Ellen Sheffield! Experiment with typographic systems and text itineraries, as well as Dada and Surrealist approaches. There will be a pre-workshop assignment for participants to complete and quick writing exercises during the workshop. Various methods for getting text onto book pages will be demonstrated through mark making, transfers, stencils, stamps, and rub-on type—in addition to demonstrations on how to make simple accordion book structures.
Ellen Sheffield (she/her) is a visual artist, poet, and teacher based in Gambier, Ohio and the California Bay Area. Her works on paper and artist’s books play with image and text intersections to create unexpected readings. Collaborations with poets, found text, and visual scores are some of the ways she engages with themes of place, memory, and language perception. The Beinecke Library at Yale University, the Ella Strong Denison Library at Scripps College, Bainbridge Island Museum of Art and many others have collected her artist’s books. She recently finished 14 years of teaching Book Arts at Kenyon College.
