Saturday, January 24; 10am–5pm CT
Explore the tools and techniques of Japanese papermaking in this in-person workshop.
Learn fiber preparation techniques including cooking, cleaning and hand beating, sheet formation, pressing, and drying. Finished papers can be strong yet nearly translucent, and sheet size can range from 5 x 7 inches to 5 x 7 feet! Come away from the workshop with the skills needed to make Japanese paper independently during MCBA’s Papermaking Labs.
Wear clothes that can get dirty and non-slip, supportive, water-resistant shoes (i.e., rubber boots, garden clogs, etc.). Participants need to return to pick up their paper on Saturday, 1/31, or later in The Shop at MCBA to allow the wet sheets of paper time to dry while pressed flat for a few days.
Papermaking is a wet and physical process that involves repeated lifting and bending. Accommodations can be made for individuals with specific needs (please share these when registering) and we encourage all abilities to participate in ways that feel safe and comfortable.
Level: Beginner. All skill levels are welcome.
Certificate: 7 hours, Category A or B; fulfills the Core papermaking requirement

MCBA offers two scholarship types for workshops—Financial Hardship Scholarships and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) Scholarships—to honor equity and increase access and artistic opportunities for those who have historically been underrepresented in the book arts. For individuals to whom these scholarships do not apply, register at the Market Rate or support MCBA's commitment to making scholarships available by registering at the Pay-It-Forward Rate.
