Paper Fiber Images: Blow-Outs & Pulp Painting

  • Minnesota Center for Book Arts 1011 South Washington Avenue #100 Minneapolis, MN, 55415 United States (map)

Saturday, December 20; 10am–4pm CT

In this in-person workshop, explore blowouts and pulp painting, image-making techniques that use stencils and stencil resists to create colorful and repeatable images in your paper.

The connection between paper and print is obvious. What is often overlooked are the many possibilities of working imagery into the paper itself! Learn a method to create the stencil and how to prepare pulp for the best results. Come away with samples and ideas for future projects and experimentations with imagery in paper.

We'll use pre-made stencils, and have time to make our own to use for applying colored pulp to the base sheets (painting). We'll use the same stencils as resists, which protect the paper when it gets sprayed with water, blowing out the fiber that is not protected. These techniques are inspired by printmaking, which uses stencils with ink. The pulp is used here instead of ink.

Wear clothing that can get dirty and shoes that can get wet (i.e. rubber boots, garden clogs, etc.). Participants need to return to pick up their paper on Saturday, 1/3, or later in The Shop at MCBA to allow the wet sheets of paper time to dry while pressed flat for a few days.

Please note that papermaking is a wet and physical process that involves repeated lifting and bending. Accommodations can be made for individuals with specific needs (please share these when registering) and we encourage all abilities to participate in ways that feel safe and comfortable.

Level: Intermediate. Basic papermaking experience is helpful prior to taking this workshop.
