Thursdays: July 9, 16, 23; 6–9pm CT
Create sculptural books—full of color and movement—that feature handmade paper and accessible binding techniques in this in-person workshop.
We’ll start by looking at examples of sculptural artist’s books and brainstorming book ideas that are well-suited to book binding with handmade paper. Then, we’ll head to the papermaking studio to pull and dry custom-shaped sheets. On night two, we’ll use gelatin-sizing and ink to add color to our paper. We’ll also explore different ways to add imagery and text to the pages, including tipping-in, stamping, and ink-jet printing. During the final meeting, we’ll create two book forms with your handmade paper: a drum leaf binding and book-ring binding. You’ll leave with two highly personalized book forms that defy the traditional notion of a book.
Wear clothes that can get dirty and non-slip, supportive, water-resistant shoes (i.e., rubber boots, garden clogs, etc.). Participation in European Papermaking is needed in order to attend Papermaking Labs to make paper independently in MCBA’s studios.
Papermaking is a wet and physical process that involves repeated lifting and bending. Accommodations can be made for individuals with specific needs (please share these when registering) and we encourage all abilities to participate in ways that feel safe and comfortable.
Level: Beginner. All skill levels are welcome.
Certificate: 9 hours, Category B or C
