Immerse yourself in the oldest form of marbling, Suminagashi 墨流し (“floating ink”), from your own workspace.
In this virtual workshop, we will explore the history, materials, and techniques of this meditative art before spending the majority of the session practicing and experimenting together.
Through live demonstration and guided practice, you’ll learn how ink behaves on water and how small, repetitive movements create endlessly varied patterns. Participants will have time to play, observe, and refine their approach, with opportunities to ask questions and receive feedback throughout the session. By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a collection of marbled sheets and a strong foundation to continue practicing Suminagashi independently.
This workshop is designed for participants to work alongside the instructor from home. Set up and prep instructions can be found on the materials list. Participants are also welcome to set up and marble paper after the workshop, if it feels best to focus on instruction only during the workshop.
Level: Beginner. All skill levels are welcome.
Certificate: 2.5 hours, Category A or D
