Suminagashi: Guided Exploration

  • Minnesota Center for Book Arts 1011 South Washington Avenue #100 Minneapolis, MN, 55415 United States (map)

Saturday, June 20; 1–4pm CT

Explore and experiment with the art of Japanese marbling—or suminagashi 墨流し (“spilled or floating ink”)—in a supportive, collaborative environment.

In this in-person workshop, practice suminagashi independently with individualized support from the instructor, who will demonstrate techniques, answer questions, and help troubleshoot as needed.

Inks, brushes, and a variety of papers will be provided to encourage a focus on play, discovery, and refinement. Whether you are revisiting the technique or deepening your exploration, this in-person workshop provides a focused setting to build your skills and practice playing with paper, ink, and tools. This art form can also be viewed as a meditation practice as it is all about exploring the variations of repetitive movement.

Participants are welcome to bring paper, tools, or other materials for experimentation. Some papers that work well are mulberry paper (100-150 gsm) or printmaking paper (80lb) with a smooth finish. Paper should be no larger than 12 x 9.5 inches in order to fit in the suminagashi vats.

Wear clothes that can get dirty and non-slip, supportive, water-resistant shoes (i.e., rubber boots, garden clogs, etc.). Participants may need to return to pick up their paper on Saturday, 6/27, or later in The Shop at MCBA to allow the wet sheets of paper time to dry.

Level: Intermediate. Previous experience with Suminagashi is required.
Certificate: 3 hours, Category B or D
