Papermaking Intensive: Surface Treatment Study

  • Minnesota Center for Book Arts 1011 South Washington Avenue #100 Minneapolis, MN, 55415 United States (map)

Tuesday–Friday, June 23, 24, 25, 26; 10am–4pm CT

Join Amanda Degener and Rachel Payne in an immersive, in-person workshop featuring surface treatment on flax paper and sturdy paper bindings.

First, Amanda will introduce natural dyeing and surface treatments on flax paper, including indigo, walnut, and persimmon dyes. These dyed papers are special because of the crackling, layering, and combined effects resulting in dark, durable papers. Then, Rachel will offer guided, step-by-step instruction to create two bindings featuring the treated papers: a paper case and an album. Instructors will share recipes and step-by-step instructions for surface treatment processes—there are no trade secrets!—and participants are encouraged to use the album they make in the workshop to showcase their papers for future reference. This workshop is ideal for anyone who appreciates paper bindings and strong, dark paper.

Wear clothes that can get dirty and non-slip, supportive, water-resistant shoes (i.e., rubber boots, garden clogs, etc.). MCBA has water-resistent aprons. Paper will be 11 x 17 inches in order to fit in a suitcase or flat mailer.

Level: Beginner. All skill levels are welcome.
Certificate: 24 hours, Category B or C
