A Look of Otherness Artist's Book by Ashley Chan

$375.00

A Look of Otherness visualizes the duality of identities using distilled and paradoxical symbols. It attempts to physically represent the contradicting yet interwoven nature it sometimes feels to be Asian American. On one side, traditional Chinese iconography is reduced to simplified motifs. On the other, stylized illustrations of plants commonly found in America distract from the fact that they are not native to the area.

2 layer screen prints sewn into a double-sided accordion with swing panel. Cover woven with remnants of original screen prints.” -Ashley Chan

6.25” x 4.25” x 1”

Ashley J Chan (she/her) is a Chinese-American artist and designer based in Chicago, IL. As a book artist and printmaker, she uses printed media to explore identity and narrative. Her work delves into themes of the Asian-American experience, womanhood, and the shifting attachments to those identities based on the environments she exists in. Through playful structures and sculptural imagery, her work serves as a microcosm to assess her own story; chronicling her conflicting balance between heritage, contemporary realities, and cultural appreciation.
