Peak Color Artist's Book by Beth Dow
“Peak Color is a multi-paneled photographic model of the building/dismantling/rebuilding of the archetypal landscape form of a mountain peak. This book links the processes of visual
perception, memory, photography, and commercial color reproduction, and was partly inspired by René Daumal’s allegorical novel Mount Analogue.
What would it look like if we could document the unseen processes of our perception? I use the visual language of digital imaging to suggest possible models, using a peak form to suggest the mountain-like shape of a histogram, a graph that shows the distribution of tonal values in a photograph. I cut and assembled the book block from individual brochures I designed and ordered from an online print-on-demand company, and I made the book cloth from fabric I designed and ordered from an online custom fabric company. All of these
individual processes are translations of the original photographs, which were translations of my direct encounter with the landscape. As the accordion unfolds, so does the labor of my experience.” -Beth Dow
