The World Curled fan is 3-panel, tri-fold paper hand fan that carries the poem 'The World Curled', written by my (then) eight-year-old daughter in 1998. The inspiration of this fan is from paper fans that were historically used as advertising for funeral homes (often from the 1930s-1950s) and as functional keepsakes to keep mourners cool. As a collector of fans for many years I have always loved these fans and how they reveal the side panels when opened. This fan shares with the reader a poem from a child's eyes that is both sophisticated and touching as it observes the world through young eyes. This project continues my work with the poetry written by women in my family—that of my mother and daughter, bringing a voice to both their poetry work and my visual art in a familial collaboration.” - Lisa Nebenzahl
