This piece is part of the Who is America at 250? Artists' Books on the State of Democracy, an exhibition originating from the San Francisco Center for the Book. On view at Minnesota Center for Book Arts: June 12 - August 16, 2026. "Conceived just before the pandemic, this artist book of twenty-nine screenprint images spanning forty four pages was put into book form with the skill and design of Asa Nakata. The moneybag-headed capitalist, the one-eyed pyramid dollar, and the Klan mask are used here as shorthand for the destructive powers arrayed against the people and the planet at this critical moment of economic inequality, racist xenophobia and environmental disaster. But a growing alternative power is also at play. It’s a power that can challenge the fascists if only the sleeping giant can arise to overthrow these forces and create a world that embraces all life. The big punch in the end is a moveable guillotine - leading to hours of fun decapitating capital. Art Hazelwood (he/him) is a printmaker, artist book maker, painter, muralist, educator, independent curator, author, and political activist based in San Francisco, CA. After receiving a B.A. degree in Fine Arts at the University of California Santa Cruz, Hazelwood traveled extensively in Asia. He moved restlessly about living in, Seattle, Tokyo, Vienna, and the American Southwest before settling in San Francisco in the early 1990s. Over the last 35 years Art has created prints, artist books, paintings and murals with a strong social and political commentary.

He taught printmaking at the San Francisco Art Institute until its bankruptcy in 2020, where he was involved in union bargaining for adjunct faculty and was elected Shop Steward. Also at the Art Institute he was a founder of the San Francisco Poster Syndicate, which has brought together political poster makers from various levels of experience and backgrounds to create art for activist organizations. In 2024, he was honored with the Art is a Hammer Award from the Center for the Study of Political Graphics, the most prestigious award in the nation for political poster artists.

His prints, posters and artist books are in many collections including the Library of Congress, the Whitney Museum of American Art, Staatsbibliothek of Berlin, The British Library. In 2021, UC Santa Cruz Special Collections established an archive of over 300 of his political posters and prints. He currently teaches drawing at San Quentin State Prison.
