Hand-Lettering 2: Composition & Balance (In-Person)

  • Minnesota Center for Book Arts 1011 South Washington Avenue #100 Minneapolis, MN, 55415 United States (map)

Thursday, May 28; 6–9pm CT

Building on the fundamentals of drawing letters and short words in Hand-Lettering 1: Art of Letters (previously called The Art of Hand-Lettering), this follow-up workshop focuses on working with multiple words and short phrases.

Learn strategies for approaching composition and layout when lettering multiple words in this in-person workshop. We’ll cover key design concepts such as emphasis, consistency, harmony, and balance. Learn tips and tricks for getting started, ways to pivot, and how to visualize your work as the sum of its parts.

The majority of time will be spent hand-lettering an 8 x 10-inch poster featuring your unique phrase, quote, or words. Participants will work through a step-by-step process to hand-letter and illustrate their poster with guidance and feedback from the teaching artist.

Participants will walk away feeling more confident drawing individual letters and words as well as multiple-word designs. Design skills learned in this workshop can also be helpful when designing letterpress and screen prints, and page layout and design for artist’s books and zines

Level: Intermediate. Participants need to have already taken Hand-Lettering 1: Art of Letters or feel confident hand-lettering individual letters and short words.
Certificate: 3 hours, Category A or D; fulfills the Core design requirement
