Thursdays: August 6, 13, 20; 6–9pm CT
Letterpress 4 focuses on planning and printing an edition (or a group of identical prints).
Printing an edition starts with making design decisions: choosing ink color, paper, edition size, typefaces, and more. Artists need to prepare for printing by cutting paper, preparing images, along with setting and proofing type or whatever will be printed.
This in-person workshop will offer beginning printers strategies for creating an edition, including how to plan a project and how to make an edition of consistent prints. The teaching artist will share an example of an editioned project, created from start to finish. Then, you’ll plan and print a small, independent project which can be worked on during and outside the workshop in Letterpress Labs depending on your availability and the scale of the project.
Procedures for maintaining a community print studio will also be reviewed in addition to basic press operation, care, and safety.
The materials fee covers consumables in MCBA's studios such as ink, solvent, and studio and equipment maintenance. Participants are expected to source their own paper for their individual projects.
Participants are encouraged to participate in Letterpress Labs between workshop sessions and after the workshop ends to access MCBA's studios to print independently outside of the workshop. This workshop is an excellent refresher and opportunity to get reacquainted with MCBA’s presses and print studio.
Participation in Letterpress 4 also qualifies printers to rent equipment to work independently in MCBA’s print studio.
Level: Intermediate. Experience is required. To register for this workshop, participants must have taken Letterpress 1, 2, and 3.
Certificate: 9 hours, Category B or C
