Make a Money Mala

Saturday, July 25; 9–11am CT

Make a paper garland in the style of a money mala, a traditional garland made of currency worn by grooms in the Sikh community in India.

By wearing it, the groom invites prosperity for his family to be. Learn more about the history and custom of the money mala through a variety of examples, in this virtual workshop.

Money malas can symbolize prosperity, gratitude, a personal wish, or simply be a beautiful object to share or display. Before coming to the workshop, consider a purpose for your garland (that reflects your life and experience), then choose paper accordingly, knowing that it must be thin enough to be folded—currency notes (real or fake), text (handwritten or pages of a novel), photographs, drawings, or colored/decorative paper. Also choose a ribbon or sash to attach to the garland.

Through step-by-step instructions, learn how to fold and connect each piece of paper, then assemble the garland. Add any additional decorations and attach the garland to a ribbon which allows it to be worn at the appropriate height.

Level: Beginner. All skill levels are welcome.
Certificate: 2 hours, Category B or D
