“This work explores the juxtaposition of man-made and artificial intelligence-made imagery by feeding short descriptions describing the real-life, albeit unassuming, place in Dall-e. The relatively banal sites used in the book were documented and determined randomly on a road trip during May 2022.

Created in 2024 with multiple plate reductive relief linoleum prints generated by the artist. CMYK letterpress print imagery generated by Dall-e and poetry generate by ChatGPT. Photopolymer plates for text created by Boxcar Press. Printed on Rives Heavyweight Cream-White and handmade Khadi paper on a Vandercook SP-15. Melissa Wagner-Lawler (she/her) is an artist and Teaching Faculty in the Printmaking & Book Arts department at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She received her BFA from Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design and MFA in Visual Studies from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. For over a decade, Wagner-Lawler’s practice has been dedicated to artist books and exploring the intricacies of the format. Her artist books use letterpress and other printmaking techniques to investigate elements of tension, the breakdown of information and the fragility of circumstance. To date, she has produced 15 editioned book works, all of which are housed within collections around the country.
