In book arts, boxes are created as containers to house books, paper, and other objects; they can also function as the artwork itself as the structure provides ample opportunities for creativity and experimentation to flourish.
While this virtual workshop covers the basics of box making—including trays, partitions, drawers, and various lids—the emphasis will be on box design for artistic projects through sketches and physical experimentation (mock-ups). We’ll consider materials and space in our designs with the goal of developing an artist’s book where the box is fundamental to the meaning and design of the book.
The first session will include an overview of box making, box functionality and various techniques used in box making. Sessions two and three will include demonstrations of new techniques and guided worktime with opportunities for group and instructor feedback and problem-solving.
Come to the workshop with an idea or two to explore through box making!
Level: Intermediate. Basic box making experience helpful, but not required.

The Pay-It-Forward rate (tuition, plus 50%) supports MCBA’s efforts to make scholarships available. We leave it to you to choose the rate that is meaningful to you based on your income, wealth, and privilege status. MCBA members receive a 10% discount on tuition.
What you'll need to participate
Tech requirements: For this participatory virtual workshop, we recommend joining on a laptop or desktop computer with a camera, microphone, and strong internet connection. You will receive step-by-step instructions for downloading Zoom (it’s free!) and accessing the workshop online approximately 2 days before the workshop’s start date.
Materials: You are responsible for sourcing your own materials from the materials list. You are welcome to reach out to teaching artists with questions about materials in advance of the workshop (contact information is listed on the materials list).
