Hardcover Exposed Sewn Binding


Tuesdays: October 20 & 27; 5–8pm CT

In this virtual workshop, learn how to create a beautiful hardcover binding using leather or cloth for the spine, and paper for the cover boards.

Then, learn how to sew the sections directly onto the leather or cloth spine with a variety of beautiful designs. Come away with three unique books featuring sewn designs for two- and three-section books that are completely flexible (open flat) and resistant to wear. 

Level: Intermediate. Foundational binding experience required.
Certificate: 6 hours, Category B or D


Pricing

$147 | $74 Scholarship | $221 Pay-It-Forward

Scholarships are available for individuals facing adversity as it relates to identity, income/wealth, and lack of access to arts resources. The Pay-It-Forward rate (tuition, plus 50%) supports MCBA’s efforts to make scholarships available. We leave it to you to choose the rate that is meaningful to you based on your income, wealth, and privilege status. MCBA members receive a 10% discount on tuition.


What you'll need to participate

Tech requirements: For this participatory virtual workshop, we recommend joining on a laptop or desktop computer with a camera, microphone, and strong internet connection. You will receive step-by-step instructions for downloading Zoom (it’s free!) and accessing the workshop online approximately 2 days before the workshop’s start date. 

Materials: You are responsible for sourcing your own materials from the materials list. You are welcome to reach out to teaching artists with questions about materials in advance of the workshop (contact information is listed on the materials list).
