The drum leaf binding—developed by Tim Ely—is a simple yet elegant design that uses folio pages printed on one side and not sewn through the fold.
This structure lends itself well to images and text moving across the gutter (the inside margin of a book where the pages are joined together by the spine). Wet adhesives are kept to a minimum; covers can be constructed of paper and cloth.
In this in-person workshop, we will explore two or three variations of this binding style and each participant will have an opportunity to bind one book in the drum leaf style. Participants will be encouraged to share how they would like to use the drum leaf binding for future projects. The workshop will include discussion, demonstration, and work time.
Techniques taught will involve accurate measuring, light gluing, and using sharp blades and knives for cutting. All abilities are welcome to participate in whatever ways feel safe and comfortable.
Level: Beginner. All skill levels are welcome. Previous bookbinding experience is helpful but is not necessary.
