Wednesday, October 7; 7–9pm CT
Designed to demystify the often hidden administrative and social labor costs of making artists’ books, this virtual workshop will cover the how, why, and what of working with other artists and writers on collaborative publications.
The workshop will explore the following questions:
What does it mean to be the “publisher” of a book?
What kinds of work does it actually entail?
What are the responsibilities that come along with publishing the work of others? What are the risks?
What steps can you take to help ensure that a collaboration goes well?
We will look at historical and contemporary examples of collaborative artists’ publications, discuss what “collaborative publishing as an artistic practice” might mean for each of us, and collectively build a set of collaboration strategies based on our own experiences and ideas. Short presentations will introduce topics, followed by discussion and questions.
This workshop is part of a three-part series that can be taken sequentially, out-of-order, or as independent workshops. The other two workshops in the series are Budgeting and Pricing Your Artist's Books and Selling and Distributing Your Artist's Books.
Level: Beginner. This workshop is suitable for beginners who have yet to make a book and for practicing artists who want to learn more about collaboration.
Certificate: 2 hours, Category C
